When the pretty daughter of Zeke James dissapears in the middle of the night, ADA Diane Marshall and her huband Deputy Max Konstantin investigate the missing girl’s unusual behavior before her kidnapping. When forensics indicates a serial killer, a small town erupts in a paranoia-fest fed by false memories and sensational rumors. Neighbor suspects neighbor of being Satanists, serial killers, or worse. Readers of crime novels and psychological thrillers will meet their match in the labyrinthine plot. Themes of false memory and confession, criminal profiling, mob psychology, the meaning of religious experience and the nature of evil percolate through the story with satisfying intelligence and wit.
Prais for Callous from trade reviewers—
- "Kenyon revisits themes from her first novel, Rabid (2007)—small-town intrigue, salacious carryings-on,
scientific research, religious fervor... crisp character studies that distinguished her first book, and also generates considerable tension on the way to a surprising finish." Booklist, Mary Frances Wilkens
- “Impressive.”—Publishers Weekly
- “Kenyon’s definitely an author to watch. She juggles all of her story’s elements without dropping any of them ... and creates intriguing central characters ... This is a novel quite unlike standard commercial fare, a genre-bending story—part thriller, part literary slapdown with dialogue as the weapon of choice—that makes us laugh, wince and reflect all at the same time. Kenyon is definitely a keeper.”—Booklist STARRED Review
- “Robin Cook on steroids ... a nice feat.”—Bookslut Review

"Kenyon is definitely a keeper." Booklist starred review of Rabid
When Zeke James’s pretty, blonde daughter disappears in the middle of the night, ADA Diane Marshall and her husband Deputy Max Konstantin investigate the usual leads, including the girl’s odd, conservative church and her father’s strange business dealings. When a forensic tech, Vanessa Allen, thinks she sees signs of a serial killer and a teenage girl, P.J. Lessing, remembers hearing and then seeing a Satanic cult, the small town of New Canaan, Texas, explodes with paranoia. Callous is as much an exploration of social paranoia as clever crime novel with a labyrinthine plot.
